Alta Vista School

The Auburn Union School District Budget Advisory Committee has recommended a site closure as of the 2008-2009 school year.

The Committee's intention is to address project budget shortfalls in 2008-2009 and future years. Current candidates for closure are Alta Vista School and Rock Creek School.

Alta Vista has been a beloved and valued part of the community for nearly 100 years. Past Board suggestions of its closure always resulted in corresponding community uprisings of support for this valued “Jewel of Auburn."

In order to address changing community needs, Alta Vista has recently grown from a K-5 school to its current K-8 status, and Alta Vista has also gained Science - Nature Magnet School designation.

Let’s recognize those past efforts to keep Alta Vista open, vital, and growing, by continuing to keep it open and to keep it educating the youngest citizens of Auburn for many generations to come. Let’s finish what we began!

  • Save Alta Vista
Both of our kids attended Alta Vista and have gone on to EVCain and Placer High. We, as a family, had a great experience there and would hate to see it close. I still go to the ice cream social. This school is such an asset to our neighborhood and town.

When we were faced with the prospect of the school closing a few years back, we were going to head up to Bowman, so we would have been lost to the district.

I believe that closing this school would be a financial looser to the district because so many families would opt out for Bowman, Montisori or some other out-of-district option.

We have 1 child at Alta Vista. Should it close our daughter would most likely finish her remaining year in elementary school at Skyridge. We truly hope to remain at Alta Vista.
  • Keep Alta Vista Open
We have 2 graduates of Alta Vista who are now grown adults with children of there own. I also have a 2nd grader attending Alta Vista now. She has the same teacher my son had 16 years ago. We appreciate Alta Vista for its caring family atmosphere. And the Science/Nature focus is wonderful. My daughter is very comfortable there. We chose to attend this school years ago when Lincoln Way closed. If Alta Vista closes, we would request a transfer to Bowman.
  • Alta Vista school
My daughter is new to the school this year and I was going to put her in Bowman because it goes to 8th grade. I do not want my daughter to go to EV Cain. When I talked to all of my neighbors they loved Alta Vista and I found out it goes to 8th grade. I am very pleased with the school and its small and focused environment. I still think closing EV Cain and consolidating the students into the surrounding elementary schools is the best option. We need to keep families in Auburn and I will not drive across town to take my daughter to school.

We have 2 children at Alta Vista.
Alta Vista is a combination of the environment, the teachers, highly involved parents, all of which motivates our children to learn.
We would seek out a similar environment for our children if Alta Vista closes. This would appear to rule out any inter-district transfer.
  • Save Alta Vista
My daughter Leah has attended this school since Kindergarten, she is now in the 2nd grade. Although we are currently in the Alta Vista district, we originally chose Alta Vista as an out of district transfer, because of it's quaint charm. The fact that it is one of the smaller schools in the district attracted it to us. We were looking for a school where my daughter would not get lost in the shuffle, and we found it in Alta Vista. Both principles in the last few years knew every child by face & name, the teachers are all wonderful and take pride in working at Alta Vista. If Alta Vista closes, we would look at smaller private schools, to keep the integrity and closeness we found at Alta Vista. It would be a true shame to lose such a historic school!

This is my son's second year at Alta Vista. I have come to love the school, and I appreciate both the beauty of its physical location and the warm, supportive atmosphere inside the school. I have a four-year-old as well, and I'm distressed at the prospect that both my children may not be able to attend the school if it closes. Alta Vista is the closest school to our house; the second closest school is Bowman. I'd probably opt to take both my children out of the Auburn Union Elementary School District and send them to Bowman if Alta Vista closes.

Our son Matthew is in his third year at Alta Vista. We made a conscious decision to send him there, even though we have the choice and means to send him to a private school (he attended Montessori preschool).

There are a number of reasons for sending Matt to this great little school, including its proximity to our home, the excellent teachers, staff and facilities, and our desire to support the neighborhood school concept.

We also have a long Alta Vista Bucks tradition in our family. Matt is our third child to attend this great school. Our son Peter is 21, and our oldest, Megan is 26! Matt's teacher is Mrs. Kepler, who also taught Meg when she was there, so we know he's in good hands.

This kind of resource is invaluable to the development of our children, and creating great citizens for our community.

Please find another way to balance the budget, without closing this, or any other school!

Both of my children have attended Alta Vista since Kindergarten. They are now in 3rd and 6th grade. I chose Alta Vista over Colfax Elementary because of its location to friends and family. As a singe mother, this is very important. I also love the small school atmosphere. I chose to keep my 6th grader at Alta Vista rather than send her to EV Cain. I think she is in a much better environment with great staff/teachers and small classes. If Alta Vista were to close, I would like to see them go to Bowman since it has a similar feel to Alta Vista.
  • Alta Vista School- Do not close our school
    Keep Alta Vista open

    Please keep Alta Vista Open
2 children attend Alta Vista, school of choice
if it closes would request transfer out of district for K-8 school
  • Where would my daughter go to school
If they close Alta Vista the only choice for my daughter would be Bowman this is the only school on this side of town and I will not drive clear across town to attend a school in this district. I hope that the after school care will still benefit me as a single mom who works. Many of the after school programs do not cater to working parents that drive from Sacramento or Roseville to get home. After school programs will need to be adjusted to accomodate the parents. I have one daughter and those who have more children will find that the close of Alta Vista will be difficult if they do not think about the parents. Hopefully we will not push more families out of Auburn, which will mean more school closures.
  • Please keep Alta Vista open!
I am currently a student at the 8th grade at Alta Vista, and I would hate to see Alta Vista close for a couple of reasons.
The first reason the school should not close, is because this schools is a K-8 school, which means you will be with your friends as the years pass by, and also, you will always know all the teachers, because they are constant.
The second reason why Alta Vista shouldn't close, is because there is lots of history to this school. It is nearly 100 years old.
The third reason is if you want your child to be good at science, come to Alta Vista because it is a science magnet school, which means they focus mostly on science. In the 6-8 the teachers spend a little over an hour and a half teaching science. In the 6-8 grade, you get to do a science fair project. Alta Vista is the only school in Placer County that does the science fair.
There are also many reasons why this school should be kept open, but the three main reasons are said above, so please help keep Alta Vista open.

  • Alta Vista is in neighborhood atmosphere
its important to keep the k-8 available to avoid over crowding at EV Cain, I had a student that attended EV Cain and I wish to keep my younger student from attending there, Alta Vista is in a great location and is walk friendly for our kids.
  • Keep Alta Vista School Open
Alta Vista has been around for nearly one hundred years. We moved here purposely to be in walking distance and enjoy being so close to school. It is nicely landscaped and sits interestingly up on the hill. It stays cool toward the summer months where as Rock Creek is so exposed. There is a lot less noise surrounding Alta Vista as compared to Rock Creek due to traffic. These are the things that make Alta Vista pleasant for the children.
  • Alta Vista
Please keep Alta Vista open to service students on the northeast area of Auburn.
  • Keep Alta Vista Open
We have one child at the school and would transfer out of district, most likely to a private school if Alta Vista closed.
I think that closing Alta Vista school would be a great shame to the community. Not only is the new K-8 format ideal, the community location, historical partnership and close family atmosphere allows it's pupils to learn more than just the curriculum taught within the building. Our son is not just another pupil, a number on the books at Alta Vista, he is a talented individual who has been taught , supported and encouraged to be the best he can be in every aspect, to include a good friend to others and a respectful citizen.
Our son transferred from an out of district into this school. We chose it specifically for the traits outlined above. The fact that it is now a Science Magnet school has only increased it's appeal.
If this school were to close, a pillar of the community would be lost and that would be a sad day for all of Auburn, and especially it's future...

I have a daughter that is in 2nd grade at Alta Vista and she loves the school. I also think it's fantastic that we have another choice for Jr. High. Please keep Alta Vista School open!
  • Christina Bickley
    Keep Alta Vista OPEN!!!
I have 2 children attending Alta Vista currently by choice.
If Alta Vista were to close, I would choose to send my children to an alternate nearby k-8 school.
  • Keep Alta Vista School Open!
I have 1 grandchild in Alta Vista and another one headed there in the 2008-09 school year. Their father went to Alta Vista and for that reason it's very special to them. The teachers are great and it's such a special school. It's not so big that they get lost in the shuffle or looked over.

    Save Alta Vista! Please!

I think that closing Alta Vista School would be a great mistake. Alta Vista is in an established neighborhood and is a part of that neighborhood. By being a small school that is now k-8, Alta Vista provides a choice for children in our district. I feel that our test scores show how well kids can do when given an option. If Alta Vista closes I would probably try to place my child in another district.
  • Alta Vista Parent
We moved several years ago to the Bowman District, but I continue to take my son to Alta Vista. There are many parents that will leave the Auburn School District if Alta Vista closes. That means more money lost! We can't afford to do this to the Auburn Community. These children are our future!
  • Keep Alta Vista Open
I have three children who have all attended Alta Vista School. My oldest entered Alta Vista School 5 years ago when we moved to Auburn, and we have stayed at the school even after moving to another neighborhood across town. I appreciate the small school environment where everyone knows me and my children. I feel that my children are in a safe place where they are given the individual attention that they need. The teachers and staff are all wonderful, and the school has a tremendous amount of parent support. I do not want to move my children to another school where they will be lost in the crowd.
